We wonder why our society’s leaders don’t share our values. Yet we make it extremely difficult for those leadership positions to be occupied by women, immigrants, people of color, engaged parents, etc. Indra Nooyi, who became CEO of PepsiCo as an Indian-American woman, has been trying to do something about it.
As CEO of PepsiCo, she led the company’s Performance with Purpose (PwP) initiative, which focused on healthier products, less negative impact on the environment, and better care for employees. Throughout her career and since her retirement, she has given speeches about work-life balance and PwP, and she has served on boards of many institutions. She has fought for the advancement of women and for the good of all people.
This all came to my attention a few years ago when I studied Indra Nooyi in my MBA leadership course. I learned so much from watching her speeches and interviews (and I read this book in her voice because of it). I always hoped that Nooyi would write a book; I am so glad that she did and that I read it. All leaders–men and women, current and future–need to read this and consider Nooyi’s ideas so that we can have leaders in our businesses and governments who actually share our values and do some good.
